Symptoms

If your elderly parent is acting weirdly, you should get a medical checkup. This could be a sign of a serious ailment, such as dementia or depression. Regardless of the cause, the change in personality can be troubling. If you’re concerned, contact a local doctor to learn more. The following article will go over some of the most common reasons why your mother might be acting weird.

Frequently falling and stumbling are two common signs of dementia. Your elderly parent may have been a steady, even jovial person for years, but suddenly starts to stumble and fall. One study of 125 older adults found that people who fell most often over an eight-month period also had the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Inability to recognize sarcasm or lying are also signs of dementia.

Repeating everyday activities is another common sign of dementia. You may notice your elderly parent repeating jokes or thoughts you’ve told them a dozen times. They may become easily upset about new situations or recurring memories. They may start to wander aimlessly, even in familiar places. The symptoms of dementia include forgetting important dates and activities. You should document reoccurring memory loss so that you can document any signs of dementia.

Causes

One of the most frustrating things you can experience as an adult child is to see your aging mother behave in an increasingly mean and controlling manner. This behavior may be the result of cognitive decline, a reaction to medications, or a challenging life situation. The good news is that there are many causes of meanness among elderly people. Listed below are some of the most common causes. Here are some tips to help you understand your aging mother better.

Mood changes: While a number of mental illnesses can affect people at any age, mood changes can be an early sign of dementia or depression. Luckily, there are ways to detect an underlying mental health issue and help your mother manage her symptoms. In addition to providing support, you can help your aging parent determine the cause of her irritability and help her manage it. This can be an emotional and difficult time for you, so try to be patient and understanding.

One of the most common causes of elders acting strangely is a urinary tract infection. Seniors have different symptoms than younger adults, so it’s important to determine the exact cause of the condition. Remember to talk to your loved one’s doctor or mental health professional for more information. These professionals can provide you with tips and advice for managing your loved one’s symptoms. You can also make her feel better by sending her care packages.

Treatment

The first clue that something is wrong is when your aging loved one suddenly starts speaking with profanity or inappropriate language. Your parent may have never used four-letter words or insulting names in public before, but suddenly she’s using them. If this behavior is not completely normal for your aging loved one, she may be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. If you notice that your loved one has suddenly changed in this way, you should seek treatment immediately.
